When fitted properly, dust masks prevent the inhalation of dust in the air and thereby protect the lungs. When inhaling, dust-filled air is pulled through the mask and the dust is captured on the outside layer of the mask. Dust masks not fitted properly, will allow dust-filled air to bypass the mask and enter the respiratory tract. Chemical vapours and toxic substances are not filtered out by dust masks.
